Beyond the Bedside: Free career guides for doctors

Every week, our inbox gets the same email. "I'm a doctor. I want out of clinical work. Can you find me a job?"

I understand why, medicine in Australia is asking a lot of the people who practise it. But after placing hundreds of medical officers into careers beyond the bedside, across government, insurance, industry, research and healthtech, I've learnt that most of these emails come too early. Not because the person isn't talented. Because they haven't yet worked out what they're moving towards.

The real problem is education at the moment of enquiry When a clinician first reaches out, they usually need three things before they need a recruiter or a coach:

  • An honest picture of what each pathway is actually like

  • Realistic expectations on pay, pace and culture

  • A few practical steps to test whether it suits them

One-to-one conversations are a slow, expensive way to deliver that. So most clinicians either get nothing, or get a job ad. Neither helps.

Introducing the Beyond the Bedside Readiness Series

It's a free set of seven short guides, built from what I've seen work, and fail, over 17 years in healthcare:

  • Module 0: Before You Leap. Start here. Burnout is a reason to act, not a career plan.

  • Module 1: Government. Think in systems, stay apolitical, write like a lawyer.

  • Module 2: Pharma and medtech. Evidence meets commerce.

  • Module 3: Insurance. Advise, don't decide.

  • Module 4: Tech and startups. Translate clinical reality into product.

  • Module 5: Clinical research and CRO. Hands-on medicine, without the roster.

  • Module 6: Advisory. Hourly rates, equity and ESOPs, and how to win the work.

Each guide is two pages. Each covers the culture shift, the roles, pay and structure, who thrives and who struggles, and ends with prep tasks and a self-check.

Step back to go two steps forward

The most common myth I hear is that you can advise from home at a specialist hourly rate. Some people do, eventually, but almost nobody starts there. Specialist rates reflect clinical risk and scarcity, and neither transfers neatly. The clinicians who do well accept a step back on hourly rate, build a track record, and are often out-earning their old role within a few years.

How it works

Start with a short readiness check. It takes about five minutes and points you to the right guides. If you're ready, you'll be invited to book a call with me. If you're not ready yet, that's useful too, you'll know exactly what to do next. If you need deeper, one-to-one support, a good career coach is worth every cent. This series means you arrive at that conversation prepared.
